Classical architecture or modern architecture?

Around the world there are so many fantastic examples of both classical and modern architecture. From the cities of Europe, famed for their great culture and historical significance, to the modern cities of Vancouver and Dubai. Which is better? Perhaps the question is one that can never be answered as both types of architecture can be just as magnificent as the other.

For example, the Trevi Fountain in Rome is one of the most stunning buildings in the world. The masonry is unparalleled. The many Cathedrals of England are also inspiring to look at. The town centres of cities such as Zurich, Dubrovnik and Vienna are paradises for those wanting to see the best that classical architecture has to offer. The size of the buildings along with the ability to create intricate patterns and carvings out of a material as hardy as stone is what makes these buildings to magnificent and wonderous. Next time you are on your italy ski holidays take a bit of time to walk around and appreciate the cities and towns.

Modern architecture can also excite the senses. In recent times, the use of glass has been very popular and high rise buildings made out of it have sprung up all over the world in many cities. Some of the buildings look ordinary, some look amazing. The 30 St Mary Axe skyscraper in London, also known as ‘the Gherkin‘ is a great example of stunning modern architecture.

Other places to see glass buildings at their best are cities like Beijing and Tokyo. If I was to envision cities of the future, or cities from science fiction novels, they would look like Tokyo, such is its afinity with technology and modernity. Dubai is also pushing the limits of what can be achieved with glass with some inspiring architecture of its own.

As you can see, both classical and modern architecture have their merits and stunning buildings can be achieved with both styles.
