The City of Edinburgh
There are many fantastic cities throughout the United Kingdom. London, Newcastle, York and Durham are some of the best. These cities are great for many reasons, one of which is their architecture. These cities showcase some of the best Medieval, Neo-Classical and Georgian architecture around and their cities are filled with culture and history. Durham and York have barely changed appearance in the last 200 years which makes them excellent places to visit to get away from modern day life. Whilst Newcastle and London have both embraced the modern era, they still hold true to their own histories.
Other than those examples, one city, in my opinion, could be the most beautiful of all in Britain, and that is Edinburgh. The capital of Scotland is a well known city by British and foreign people alike. It has a rich culture and a rich history and this is well documented in the old part of town. Edinburgh is separated into two sides. The old part of town, where the Castle rests and many of Edinburgh’s fantastic gothic architecture lies, and the new town, built in blocks (much like American cities) much later on. Both sides showcase great architecture.
As mentioned, the old town has the Castle, that has dominated Edinburgh’s skyline for centuries. It also includes many Churches and Cathedrals built in the Gothic style (and aside from the architecture, there is also some amazing interiors and antiques, check out the Luxury designer bedding of the past when you wonder through the tapastry clad hallways of the castles). These buildings are amazing to look at, each one as photogenic as the last. The new part of town, whilst much more modern, is also very pretty. It has some fantastic examples of neo-classical architecture and is also well worth a look. For architecture enthusiasts, this city is not to be missed!
