Central Park-the first planned green space?
Central park in Manhatten is a beautiful famous park open form morning until midnight. It is based right in the middle of a bustling city and serves as an excellent spot to take pleasure in whether that be via taking casual walks or jogging (although make sure you have a gps running watch because it is quite easy to get lost in) or strollling along with children in tow.
Way back in the 1880s the need for this park was seen. With the industrial revelution and all the new building within city areas to support the local economy green spaces were fast disapearing. The greanery was quickly being replaced with housing for workers to keep the wheels of commerce moving and industrial buildings complete with the smoke and pollution these factories and sweat shops entailed.
Central park was created in 1853 with the help of a designer famous for this marvelous accomplishment by the name of Frederick Law Olmsted. this was no small undertaking. This huge park which now is a welcome open scenic space in the heart of inner city Manhatten was twenty years in the making!
For this time period this was probably quite short as major building works such as cathedrals could still take about fifty years to complete. Some were so grand they were a few hundred years in the making and whole teams of architects working on them.
Its hard to belive how many trees were planted. Four to five million! That together with about eight hundred and fifteen varieties of vines, and plants and the like and there were six hundred and thirty species of trees planted according to greatbuilding.com.
