The energy boom is a good thing, but it means we have to think ahead. We can’t afford to outgrow our water supply anymore than we can afford to lose our young people to other states in search of work. We need representatives working to define our choices and build consensus about our priorities. A balance between saving for the future and selective reinvestment in the irreplaceable people and places of Wyoming must become a top legislative mission. We must settle for nothing less than lasting economic diversification, thoughtful infrastructure development and continued conservation of our treasured natural environment. State government can only achieve wise and benign growth through a firm commitment to support local community leaders over the long haul.
